Communication Is Fundamental For Forming Human Relationships

Communication is fundamental for forming human relationships and those relationships are formed by effective communication. Everyday we share information and knowledge with our families, friends, coworkers, and sometimes create new relationships with strangers. People communicate with one another to express their thoughts and emotions, and as a result, helps us to understand the ideas and feelings of others. In Season 2, Episode 14 of the comedy The Real O’Neals, â€Å"The Real Heartbreak,† Kenny goes through his first breakup with boyfriend, Brett. Valentine’s Day is coming soon and Kenny becomes over dramatic about spending the day alone so he reluctantly decides to join Jimmy and Pat, his brother and father, respectively, to a Lonely Hearts†¦show more content†¦The next example of verbal communication that is used in the scene is equivocation. Equivocal language requires using words that have broad meanings that can be interpreted a number of ways as well as help us out of an uncomfortable situation (O’Hair, Wiemann, Mullin, Teven, 2015, p.74). Jimmy gives Kenny the reinforcemnt he needs to walk through the doors of the Lonely Hearts club and that everything will be okay. However, when he enters the room, the club is decorated with red balloons and hearts everywhere. Jimmy immediately tries to right the situation by saying, â€Å"It’s not a big deal, its just a bunch of balloons† (Sudduth, 2017). His dad continues to join in on the conversation trying to make light of the situation by telling Kenny to just think of it as Heart Disease Awareness week. But everything they tell Kenny only reminded him of his past memories with Brett, the ex-boyfriend. Jimmy continues to change the subject by showing Kenny how the heart balloons take on different shapes. â€Å"Turn it upside down, it’s a butt. Turn it out, boobies!,† says Jimmy (Sudduth, 2017). His brother tells him there is more â€Å"fish in th e sea† (Sudduth, 2017). But Kenny is reminded that fish is Brett’s favorite food and the sea is his favorite place. It is obvious that Jimmy and dad, Pat want to keep Kenny happy without experiencing a meltdown and ruin their night.
